Types of Network
Although the subject of network types can be complex, when considering the issue for small to medium size businesses there are basically 2 choices...
- Peer to Peer Networks
- A Peer-to-peer network consists of a number of PC's connected to each other with no central server.
- Files can be shared between PC's, and a printer connected to one PC can be accessed by another PC.
- Peer-to peer networks are often much simpler to set up than client/server networks but lack some of the advantages normally associated with networks such as central security and back up.
- Peer-to-peer networks should really only be set up among a few computers within an office or single room.
- Client/Server Networks
- The Client/Server network consists of 2 types of computers. The Client PC's are the normal desktop PC's whilst the Server is a powerful centrally located computer that links all of the clients.
- A Client/Server network brings all the advantages of a centrally managed file system, security and back up.
- A Client/Server network is more complicated to set up although advances in software has made the process much easier and cost effective.
