The Microsoft Access 97 conundrum? The first version of Microsoft Access to be widely used to develop applications within business was Access 97. In it's time it was groundbreaking but 10 years in software terms is a lifetime and it is now viewed as legacy (or antiquated) software. A significant number of businesses still have key database applications written in Access 97 partly because 'if it works why change it'. However if this scenario is one that fits your business there are a number of issues that you may wish to consider:
Unfortunately Access 97 databases are not compatible with any later version of Access (2000,2002,2003). Therefore the only upgrade option is rebuild the existing application in a later Access version. The good news, however, is that this does not have to be a long or expensive process and is something that Redwing Software has become very adept at.
