A desktop application is simply a piece of software that is in installed on a desktop PC. Examples of desktop applications include Microsoft Word and Excel. The desktop PC is also referred to as the 'Client'.

If the application is linked to a database, and is to be used by more than one person, then the database will reside in a single location ( i.e. a server) and be linked to the desktop application across a network.

Modern operating systems have made setting up such arrangements relatively easy and comparatively inexpensive.
