All applications require a Front End i.e. what appears on your screen. Custom Built Applications have the luxury of being able to be designed to have a 'unique look and feel' and to interact with the user in exactly the way that the user wants.

There are a number of software tools that can be used to develop the Front End. Some examples...

Microsoft Access

Possibly the quickest and cheapest way of building a front end is by using Microsoft Access. It gives the developer all the tools required to build a front end that has the look and feel of any other Windows based application and comes as part of the Microsoft Office suite.

Visual Basic

For larger and more complex solutions the development language of choice is Visual Basic or VB. Used to create 'standalone' solutions that can be deployed on any PC without the need of any other installed software (Windows apart).
