The Back End The vast majority of custom built applications will also require a Back End i.e. the business end of the application 'hidden' behind the scenes. Typically this will be a database residing on a server. Some examples of software tools that can be used to develop the Front End. Microsoft Access The great advantage of using Microsoft Access is that, as well as coming with all the components required to build the Front End, it is at heart a database. Ideal for applications to be used by less than 5 people and that will store less than one million records. SQL Server For more robust solutions where records may run into millions and/or concurrent users will be more than 5. SQL Server is Microsoft's server based database solution and must run in a Windows Server 2000/2003 network environment. mySQL Similar product to Microsoft's SQL Server with one main difference - it's for the most part free! Part of the Open Source software movement - but don't be fooled by this for it is every bit as robust and reliable as any of Microsoft's database products.
